đź’ˇA new Wellness Sunday idea for you..

Hey hey Reader,

Welcome to the New Year! ✨ I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

(Sorry this is one day late, my daughter's birthday was on Sunday - and I got distracted and forgot to hit send).

I don't know about you, but for me, there’s something magical about this fresh start, a clean slate inviting us to focus on what truly matters.

This year, let’s make our health and energy a top priority.

Today's short and sweet wellness tip is all about the mitochondria.

Today's Wellness Sunday Tip

I’ve been diving into Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health by Dr. Casey Means, and it’s filled with insights about how your metabolism—how your body creates energy—affects every part of your life.

Why Metabolic Health Matters
When your metabolism is thriving, you’ll feel it: steady energy, sharper focus, better moods, and fewer health hiccups.

It’s like giving your body a perfectly tuned engine to power through your days.

And at the heart of it all are your mitochondria—the tiny powerhouses inside your cells that convert food into energy.

Taking care of these cellular engines is key to feeling our best.

Unfortunately, our modern way of living is destroying our mitochondria in 10 ways.

  1. Too much sugar. We (and our kids) are eating about 700 to 3000 percent more sugar than our great-grandparents! Imagine being asked to do 700 to 3000 percent more work than you normally do daily - you'd collapse! That's basically how our mitochondria feel about all the extra sugar.
  2. Missing micronutrients (aka too much processed food). Even though we are eating more calories than before, we have the most micronutrient-depleted diet we've ever had in history. 50% of Americans are deficient in at least some critical micronutrients.
  3. Microbiome issues. A healthy flourishing gut microbiome produces thousands of post-biotic helpful chemicals that directly support the mitochondria. But refined sugar, processed food, pesticides, medications, antibiotics, stress, alcohol, and inactivity all weaken the gut microbiome.
  4. Not enough movement. Our sedentary lifestyle, combined with a lack of physical activity leads to decreased mitochondrial function.
  5. Chronic stress. Continuous cortisol in the body directly damages the mitochondria and inhibits the creation of new mitochondria leading to less energy production.
  6. Medications and drugs. Antibiotics, antiretroviral drugs, statins, beta-blockers, alcohol, and methamphetamines, all negatively impact mitochondria.
  7. Not enough sleep. Poor quality and quantity of sleep generate a wide array of downstream effects that damage the mitochondria.
  8. Environmental toxins and pollutants. Many synthetic industrial chemicals that have entered our food, water, air, and consumer products are wreaking havoc on our mitochondria. Cigarette smoke and vaping chemicals are some of the most potent toxins for our mitochondria.
  9. Artificial light and circadian disruption. With our computers, tablets, phones, and TV screens we are exposed to blue light at unnatural times - disrupting our circadian rhythms which in turn contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction.
  10. "Thermoneutrality". We now spend most of our time indoors at relatively consistent temperatures. Interestingly, our mitochondria thrive when we are exposed to more frequent swings in temperture - both cold and hot.

The book is a great read and super eye-opening! If you are looking for a new book to motivate you to take better care of yourself - I highly recommend it! Click here to get a copy.

Here are 3 Simple Steps to Support Your Mitochondria (And Boost Energy) This Week

  1. Start with Whole Foods: Think colorful veggies, clean proteins, and healthy animal and plant fats (no seed oils). Every bite fuels your cells and sets the tone for how your body uses energy.
  2. Move More: Whether it’s morning stretches, brisk walks, or dance parties with the kids, regular movement keeps your metabolism humming.
  3. Prioritize Rest: A good night’s sleep is like hitting the reset button for your energy systems. Ultradian rhythm breaks during the day are essential to maintaining that energy.

Try This Quick Energy Reset
Feeling sluggish already? Here’s a 2-minute reset to add to your routine:

  1. Lie on the floor and elevate your feet above your heart (a wall works great for support).
  2. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and let gravity work its magic.
  3. Stay for a couple of minutes, allowing your body to relax and reset.

This simple practice boosts circulation, reduces tension, and clears your mind—a little gift to yourself whenever you need it.

Your Year of Good Energy

This year, let’s focus on the energy that sustains you.

Start small, stay consistent, and notice how these little shifts ripple through your days. You’re setting yourself up for a vibrant, thriving year.

Here’s to your health, your energy, and the incredible year ahead! 💖

Hugs,
